Saving Lives With Stem Cells

Stem cells can be donated by almost anyone. The process is simple. Good health is the main requirement. After determining this, the HLA type of the donor is found. Then, depending on what type of stem cells are being donated, the procedure is done.

Procedure 1:

If bone marrow stem cells are being donated, the procedure is as follows...

1. The donor is given an anesthetic.

2.The cells are taken from the back of the pelvic bone. The amount is based on the donor's weight. Ususally it is around 10% of the bone marrow in the donor's body.

3. After the extraction, blood that the donor gave before the procedure is put back into their body, or the blood replenishes itself in a few weeks.

4. Then the donor is monitored until they are able to function normally.

Procedure 2:

If peripheral blood stem cells are being donated, the procedure is as follows...

1. The stem cells are taken through a catheter from the arm, much like donating blood.

2. The blood is put through a machine where the stem cells and the blood cells are seperated. The blood cells are then put back into the body.

3. Then the donor is monitored until they are able to function normally.

Places to donate

You can donate at more than one place. You can donate at your local blood bank, stem cells can be taken from the umbilical cord at the birth of a child, or you can talk to your doctor about your options.

Stem Cell treatments benefit a variety of people.  if you have cancer, brain damage, a spinal cord injury, heart damage, baldness, Haematopoiesis (blood cell formation), missing teeth, deafness, blindness, Graft vs. host disease and Crohn's disease, diabetes, Neural and behavioral birth defects, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, infertility, a wound or orthopedic conditions then stem cell treatment is a strong possibility.
